Homemade Blackberry Dumplings

Blackberry Dumplings
We are lucky enough to have an abundance of wild blackberry bushes in our yard, a true gift of the summer season! Usually, we just pick the fresh, juicy berries straight off the bushes for a simple snack, but this time my husband had a specific craving: homemade blackberry dumplings. It became a fun, collaborative kitchen project: he picked the berries, and I handled the baking.  The result was this incredible dessert that perfectly captures the essence of summer. I made our favorite simple, fluffy dough, filled it with the sweetened, ripe blackberries, and topped the warm creation off with a generous scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. The contrast of the warm, syrupy fruit and dough with the melting ice cream is a delightful treat that you’ll want to make all season long.  This easy blackberry dumpling recipe is pure Southern comfort food and brings back wonderful memories of childhood summers and grandmother’s cooking.

Key Ingredients for Your Blackberry Dumplings
This simple recipe relies on pantry staples and fresh produce to create a delicious and satisfying dessert.
  • Fresh Blackberries: About 4-5 cups of ripe berries are ideal. You can also use frozen blackberries if fresh ones aren’t in season.
  • Sugar: To sweeten the berries and the dumpling dough. The amount can be adjusted based on the natural sweetness of your fruit.
  • Water & Lemon Juice: These create the base for the luscious, syrupy sauce.
  • All-Purpose Flour, Baking Powder, & Salt: The dry ingredients that give the dumplings their light and fluffy texture.
  • Milk & Butter/Shortening: The wet ingredients for a tender dough.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: An optional but highly recommended addition for serving.
