How often do you wake up in the morning and immediately start rushing to get ready? Sure, you set the alarm, but you skipped that and now you’re later than you want to be. You have time to get washed and dressed, but you don’t have time to sit down and eat a good, filling breakfast before you have to run. This is a common scenario for many working people – and even parents – that breakfast is an afterthought. It’s not until you’re halfway to work that you buy something carb-heavy and sugary in the shops and eat it as you run. It’s not the healthiest start to the morning, even if your breakfast choice IS within your calorie count for the day. There’s nothing wrong with setting an earlier alarm to ensure that the most important meal of the day is eaten well.
They say that you should eat breakfast like a king – but that doesn’t mean that you have to lay on a super spread to enjoy. All it means is that your breakfast should be nourishing and filling, and – most importantly – tasty. It should be a meal that you look forward to eating. It should be varied and tasty and it should really make you feel set up for the morning. There are a lot of breakfast options that you can choose from, whether it be eggs and bacon or one of these easy ways to make oatmeal (and yes, there is more than one!). Most people don’t believe that breakfast is all that important, but we’re here to tell you that it’s one of the most important ways to start your day properly. Below, we’ve put together ten excellent reasons breakfast is something in which you should indulge every day!
- It Improves Your Metabolism
The word breakfast comes from the phrase “breaking the fast”. You have spent the whole night asleep and not eating or drinking, and your breakfast is the meal that takes your body out of that fasted mode. If you want to improve your metabolism, you want to make sure that you eat something nourishing and keep your waistline trim at the same time. You can increase your body’s fat-burning potential with the right breakfast, and you can feel the effects as soon as you have eaten. Your energy levels will change after you eat, and you can feel more awake!
- Your Blood Sugar Balances Out
If you choose a protein-filled breakfast over a bagel or a muffin, you will be able to improve your blood sugar levels and reduce your risk of issues like diabetes and heart disease. Try out omelettes, poached eggs and mushrooms and even a hearty oatmeal with stewed apples and cinnamon to release slow-burning energy all morning long.
- You Can Think!
When you skip breakfast, you will often find that you feel more sluggish and you make bad choices for your food as a result. You won’t sit down to eat a great breakfast, but you will grab a sugary muffin or a fast food breakfast instead. When you choose a good breakfast, you will be more likely to eat a healthier diet overall. Once you’re on track eating a good breakfast every day, you are far more likely to think clearly about the choices that you want to make for your food. Other meals become healthier and you make better choices as a result.
- You Feed Your Brain
When you eat, you gain more energy – everyone knows that. When you eat breakfast, you improve your brain power because you literally feed your brain. You are enjoying better creative energy levels as a result of eating breakfast, and your brain is sharper and you think clearer – as we mentioned above. Improving your energy is so important if you want your day to get started properly and feel good for the rest of it. Feeding your brain is vital if you want to wake up well everyday.
- Kick Starts Your Liver & kidneys
Your body doesn’t need green juices to “detox”. If you want your body to detox on its own – feed it! When you eat breakfast, you wake up your gut and get things moving, which will then move through your body and out the other end. When this happens, you digest everything in your gut and get rid of the waste, and you make room for another meal to come through and be digested, too. Breakfast promotes natural detoxification and will make your body feel less tired and more awake. Your liver and kidneys can get moving to remove natural toxins and boom – detox!
- You Feel Satisfied
Have you ever eaten a bowl of oatmeal and not felt full and happy? Breakfast fuels your morning, and as your energy starts to burn and wake up, your morning is easier to handle because you feel satisfied with what you’ve eaten. Making good breakfast choices stops you from feeling sluggish and tired, and makes you feel better. The bonus is that you also eat less throughout the day if you have a breakfast that gets you started.
- When You Skip, You Gain
Skipping breakfast is often the first thing that people do when they want to lose weight, but skipping it can increase the insulin response from your body. This then increases your fat storage levels and you can gain weight as a result. Sure, you may not notice it overnight, but you need to keep your metabolism in check and this is so much easier if you eat a great breakfast in the morning.
- The Choices Are Endless
Who says breakfast has to consist of breakfast food? You can eat whatever you want for breakfast as long as it makes you happy and it satisfies your stomach. You can choose from a range of ways to eat eggs, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, pastries, toast and more. You can have juices, water, coffee and tea and you can even have smoothies if you want to drink your favorite fruit down. There are tons of choices for breakfast, and you can branch out beyond your standard options and choose breakfast from other cultures, too!
- You Have Time!
If your car was due a service, would you do it or would you skip it? If your bicycle had a flat tire, would you continue to ride on it or would you change it? Of course, you would take the car for the service and change the tire because those things cannot run well without being looked after. Why wouldn’t you consider yourself in that equation? How are you supposed to work efficiently and manage during your day without the right fuel? You are the only person who can take care of you and you need to think about how you can make the time for yourself. If you would make time to shower and get ready in the morning, you also have time to eat. You need to think about making the time for yourself and consider it something that you can do to better your self-care efforts.
Breakfast is the one meal that you should get started with to have a better, more productive day. Checking out all of the options so that you can guarantee you are eating something delicious is the best decision that you can make for your body each morning. Choose something to eat every evening and set the alarm. The better you plan your breakfast, the better you plan your health each day. Try making it work for at least a week and see how your body feels as a result.
