This is by far the most requested dessert at holidays or anytime of the year! When I make this, I can’t make enough. It starts out with a simple yeast dough, filled with a sweetened cream cheese and topped off with crushed pineapple. Braid it all together to make a beautiful presentation and a delicious dessert!
Ingredients are as follows:
Dough:
1/2 C warm water
1 package instant yeast
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 egg
1/4 C butter, softened
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 C flour
Filling:
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
2/3 C sugar
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray nonstick cooking spray onto two cookie sheets. This recipe yields two braids.
In a small bowl mix together the water, yeast and sugar; set aside.
In a separate bowl whisk the egg.
Add in the yeast mixture and butter. Mix together for two minutes. (The mixture may be clumpy, but that won’t be a problem.)
Add salt and flour, knead for five minutes; set aside to rest.
In another bowl cream together the cream cheese and sugar; set aside.
On a floured surface roll one half of the dough out into a rectangle.
Place dough onto prepared cookie sheet then spread half of the cream cheese mixture down the center of the dough.
Take half of the pineapple and place it on top of the cream cheese.
On the sides of the dough, cut horizontal slits about two inches apart.
Starting at the bottom of the dough, flip the end in then fold over alternating pieces of the dough.
Continue until you reach the top of the dough then tuck in the top piece.
Brush a little water on top of the dough then sprinkle on some sugar.
Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. (Repeat the process with the rest of the dough and filling.)
Slice, serve and enjoy!
Can these be made ahead, and baked when needed? Also, if they have to be baked right away, how do I store them so they don’t get soggy?
Hi Cathy,
I have never made them ahead of time and only baked them when needed so I’m not quite sure on that. However, after I bake them I allow them to cool completely on a wire rack then wrap in saran wrap and place them in the fridge. I then remove them, unwrap them, slice it up and allow it to come to room temperature a bit before serving.
They have never lasted long enough for me to freeze 🙂 Hope this helps!
Take care,
Lisa
All purpose flour 🙂
Just lovely. Should I use bread flour or all purpose flour?
Thanks for the recipe. I love pineapple! My question is how long the dough needs to rest before I can continue to the next step?
The dough doesn't need to rest at all; just make it and then make the braid!
Always perfect photos &directions step by step you have turned me in to a queen of baking here at home. 🙂 great site you are the best " flour me with love. "
Do you think there is some kind of ready made dough I could use instead of making one from scratch? If so, what would you recommend and how much per braid? It simply sounds delicious.
There is frozen bread dough that is available in the freezer section which I'm sure would work just fine. I've never made it like that so I'm not sure how much, but I think one loaf would make both braids.
Try also have sweet dough.i bought it and made buns and cinnamon rolls.
They also have sweet dough.i bought it and made buns and cinnamon rolls.
Why has no one asked if a "pre made" dough could be used? **blushing** I'm not so good at creating this luscious looking dough. Love the entire idea. Beautiful and delicious! Mary Back
I think frozen dough would work fine for this…enjoy!
THANKS FOR SHARING ANOTHER WONDERFUL CREATION OF YOURS. THIS LOOKS SO EASY AND YUMMY. THE STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL IS SO WONDERFUL. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS DESSERT AND YOUR BLOG. I AM SO GLAD TO HAVE FOUND YOUR BLOG. THANKS AGAIN.
Have you ever made this the night before and refrigerated it? Either just the dough and finished the rest in the morning or all of it? Just curious if that would work.
No Starla I haven't, I've always made it in one day.
Looks fantastic!!
I have a question though, why do you use only half of the cream cheese and pineapple???
The recipe yields two braids, therefore you use half on each braid 🙂
I could eat this whole thing! It looks divine and will be trying it soon. So glad you shared!
This would be perfect for Easter brunch.
looks delicious
