Food is constantly evolving and so are our eating habits.  Here are the top food trends for 2020.

 

  1. Eating Vegan

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, you will have undoubtedly heard about the vegan movement. Veganism has gone mainstream with many of the top supermarkets and restaurants all now selling delicious vegan products.  There are a few reasons for this trend.  People are starting to discover some painful truths behind the history of their food and some of the undesirable health effects of our common food choices. People are also concerned about the state of the environment.   Animal products use a significant amount of carbon emissions during their lifecycle from farm to plate.

This year, an increasing number of people are eating more vegan or going vegan completely.

  1. Local, Organic, and Seasonal

This is another trend that is a reflection of people’s desire to become more ethical and healthy.  Buying food from local farms on a seasonal basis can be far less damaging than eating foods that have been imported from the other side of the world.  Eating organic can also improve your health by ensuring that no nasty chemicals were used in the production of the food and no GMOs are present. 2020 may be the year we return to the eating habits of our ancestors.  Good wholesome local seasonal foods that have bee grown consciously.

  1. Food Halls

Food halls are popping up everywhere at the moment. A food hall is a designated venue that plays host to a number of local or pop-up restaurants that serve their food in one place with the main dining area. People get to choose from a wide range of delicious foods and drinks helping to support local businesses. They’re also a great place to hang out.   Many food halls have started to implement live music and DJs to make food halls a great night out for couples, families, groups of friends.

  1. Small Plates

Restaurants are no longer being valued for their big portion sizes.  Diners want smaller portions and more variety. Much like tapas in the Mediterranean, restaurants are increasingly offering diners the choice of lots of mini dishes that can be shared among the table.  This helps people to eat a wider variety of foods, eat less, and be more sociable at the dinner table. This trend may be the result of the increased popularity of international street food. It’s not unusual to see Indian street food restaurants serving the best chicken biryani recipe from Delhi or delicious samosas from the streets of Mumbai.

  1. Zero-Waste Shopping

Say goodbye to plastic in 2020. More and more people are deciding to shop at stores that support the zero-waste way of life. Stores are now encouraging their customers to bring their own reusable bags and containers to their stores. Foods are presented free of packaging, helping to reduce our huge issue with plastic and waste.   Many shoppers are more than happy to shop this way which has helped to boost the number of zero-waste food stores over the last few years.
